The complete workflow

A meal plan built from real constraints.

SousMate does not begin with an endless recipe search. It starts with your day, your kitchen, and your safety needs, then narrows the choices before you need to ask what to cook.

From setup to supper

The whole loop, step by step.

You provide a small amount of useful context. SousMate uses it throughout planning, choosing, cooking, and the next pantry update.

01

Build your food and safety profile

Choose dietary needs, the cuisines you enjoy, ingredients you dislike, and any of the nine major allergen categories you need SousMate to watch.

Allergies are treated as safety constraints. Cuisine preferences are ranking signals. Dislikes are respected when suitable recipes are available.

02

Tell SousMate when cooking can happen

Set meal times, work departure and arrival times, days off, or a direct cooking-time override. Each meal receives its own practical time budget.

03

Add the pantry without counting every ounce

Tap common ingredients or speak what you bought. Pantry items use a lightweight meal-count model, while staples such as salt, pepper, oil, and common spices stay out of the match calculation.

04

Compare three routes for the meal

Every planned breakfast, lunch, or dinner can include a Quick, Standard, and Involved option. Each preview shows the dish, total time, ingredients without measurements, and pantry match.

05

Commit when you are ready to cook

Choosing “Let's cook this” unlocks ingredient measurements, full instructions, nutrition, the calculated start time, guided cooking, and recipe-scoped Sous Chef help.

06

Finish the meal and close the loop

Mark the recipe cooked to add it to history and update the non-optional pantry ingredients that were used. Rate it, add notes, or save it for another day.

Time that fits

Your schedule becomes a cooking budget.

SousMate works backward from the time a meal needs to be ready. It reserves a small buffer, then fits recipes into the minutes that remain.

Quick route

Up to 15 minThe lowest-effort option when speed matters most.

Standard route

16 to 30 minAn everyday balance of variety, technique, and cleanup.

Involved route

31 to 60 minA slower option that never exceeds the available window.

Dinner example

Home at 6:00. Dinner at 7:00.

SousMate subtracts a 15-minute buffer from the 60-minute window. That leaves 45 minutes of available cooking time.

  • Quick: up to 15 minutes
  • Standard: 16 to 30 minutes
  • Involved: 31 to 45 minutes

Other days

The calculation adapts by meal.

Breakfast uses the time between breakfast and leaving for work, with the same buffer. Lunch defaults to 30 minutes. A day off defaults to 60 minutes. A manual override takes priority and keeps a 15-minute minimum.

Recommendation logic

Why one recipe ranks above another.

The planner filters first, then ranks. That order matters: a high pantry match can never override a profiled allergen.

01

Keep only the right meal type and time range

Breakfast recipes stay with breakfast, dinner recipes stay with dinner, and “any” recipes can fill either. Total time is prep time plus cook time.

02

Remove recipes that conflict with safety constraints

SousMate checks both the allergen categories declared on a recipe and a normalized ingredient-to-allergen map. Allergen rules remain active across planning, search, and Quick Pick.

03

Apply dislikes and preference signals

Required ingredients you dislike, plus broader spicy or seafood preferences, are used to exclude unsuitable choices. If the library cannot fill a slot, SousMate may broaden non-allergy preferences, but it does not relax the allergen filter.

04

Rank by pantry coverage and preferred cuisine

The pantry score is the share of required, non-optional, non-staple ingredients currently available. Preferred cuisines receive a small ranking bonus.

05

Avoid unnecessary repetition

The planner avoids repeating the same recipe across generated slots where possible. A re-roll also tracks recipes already shown so the next stack feels genuinely new.

Preview, commit, cook

The recipe opens in deliberate stages.

SousMate gives you enough information to choose without spending a meal credit, then reveals the complete cooking experience after commitment.

Before commitment

Compare without pressure.

  • Recipe title and cuisine
  • Prep time and cook time
  • Ingredient names without quantities
  • Pantry match percentage
  • Quick, Standard, or Involved route

After commitment

Everything needed to cook.

  • Measurements and full instructions
  • Nutrition per serving
  • Calculated “start cooking by” time
  • Guided mode with step timers
  • Sous Chef help for the current recipe

Honest automation

AI helps with language. Rules run the plan.

SousMate is not a general chatbot and does not ask a model to improvise your weekly plan.

Structured logic

Used for repeatable decisions.

  • Schedule and time-tier calculations
  • Meal-type, allergen, and preference filtering
  • Pantry match scoring
  • Craving quiz ranking
  • Plan limits and usage enforcement

Focused AI

Used where natural language helps.

  • Turning a voice pantry note into structured ingredients
  • Extracting ingredients, meal type, and time from Quick Pick
  • Answering recipe-specific Sous Chef questions
  • Producing candidate recipes offline before validation
